South Asia Tsunami Emergency AppealAn urgent letter from Action Village India29th December 2004Dear Friends As I write this, the news from across south and south-east Asia gets more harrowing by the hour. Four of Action Village India's partners work with communities on or near the coast in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Orissa and they are now sending news of how their operational areas have been affected by the tidal wave which swamped India's coasts. ASSEFA, one of India's largest NGOs, works in six states. AVI supports the Lathur East integrated development project, which covers 130 villages near Chennai (formerly Madras) in Tamil Nadu. This project, which AVI has supported for a decade, is in one of the worst affected areas. In Kerala, KGSN works with fishing communities and communities around the Chilka Lake in Orissa where Ekta Parishad is active and which may have been affected, but we have no news from there so far. Yesterday, Loganathan, ASSEFA's Executive Director emailed to say:
"ASSEFA intends to take up as a first phase, 1000 families for relief operation in Lathur (and other nearby areas). They will be provided with food, cloth, bedding, medical aid etc, which works out at approximately Rs. 2 million (p25,000)."
Earlier, he wrote:
"I am conveying this message with heavy heart, the unfortunate incident has brought lot of distress and death toll. The coastal area of Tamil Nadu was worst affected, claiming 1000 human lives. Many families have lost not only their kith and kin, but also their meagre livelihood assets such as cattle, fishing boats, nets, household utensils etc. The semipucca and thatched dwellings have been washed away ... ASSEFA is working in the coastal belt between Chennai and Pondicherry, which was affected by the tidal waves. Our workers are in the field helping affected families and assessing the damage. To resettle them, requires construction of houses and livelihood assets. I am rushing to the affected area to assess what ASSEFA can do in this critical situation"
Most foreign agencies have pulled out of southern India because of its relatively strong economic growth. That means that well-established local NGOs with staff in the affected areas and good infrastructure, such as the ones AVI continues to support, are best placed to provide relief now. AVI has pledged its support to its partners and those affected in their project areas and we would be very grateful for whatever support you can offer. We will report on our partners' emergency work in a future edition of our newsletter, Village Matters. Thank You Ivan Nutbrown (Co-ordinator)
